Tom Gattoni, former athletics director, coach, and teacher at Pascack Valley High School, was recently honored by the YMCA of Greater Bergen County as the recipient of the Richard Poor Service to Community Award at the organization’s 53rd Annual Sports Award Dinner.

The award, named for one of the founders of the organizations Sports Awards Banquet, recognizes an individual’s commitment to our youth and community.  Gattoni served the Pascack Valley District for over 37 years until his retirement in 2018.  During that time, he was an exemplary teacher, coach and athletic director.

As a teacher, he was the recipient of the 1989 Governor’s Teacher of the Year award.

As a coach, he was primarily known as a baseball coach. In his 22 years as the baseball coach, he led his teams to several league titles, also winning the county championship twice as well as having his team named team of the year and himself coach of the year. Gattoni also coached wrestling, boys and girls soccer, and basketball.  And when called to serve further, he held the dual role of athletics director at both Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills for a time period.

As athletics director, he oversaw the expansion of PV’s facilities including new track, turf and lights for the stadium, a new weight room and gymnasium. This enhanced PV’s programs and allowed for greater use by all aspects of the PV community.

At the banquet, Gattoni was joined by his wife and 3 daughters, as well as colleagues Jeff & Lois Jasper, Karen Kosch, Tom Gallione, Len Cusumano, and Ken Sarajian.
