Samantha Cohn and Jacqueline Metz have each been awarded a $2,500 scholarship, along with the opportunity to apply for renewal scholarships for the next three years, by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey (AMTNJ). Both PV seniors have expressed interest in pursuing a career in mathematics education, and both have already begun helping others make meaning of mathematics here at PV.

Samantha will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall, and she wrote in her essay that, “for as long as I can remember, my dream profession was to become a teacher.  As I grew older I realized that I had a passion for math.  I have fed my passion by tutoring my peers as well as becoming a teaching assistant in a sophomore geometry class.  Watching the students understand the concepts I teach them brings me so much joy.” Samantha has shown herself to be extremely effective in her role as a teacher’s assistant in a Geometry class this year.

Jacqueline will be attending Penn State University in the fall, and she plans to major in Secondary Mathematics Education and minor in Special Education. Jacqueline wrote in her application that “I’ve wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten.  I want to inspire students, and learn all I can to accomplish that.” Jacqueline is enrolled in PV’s Teacher Cadet Program, where she has served effectively as a teacher’s assistant in a freshman Algebra I class and a sophomore Geometry class.

We are incredibly proud of these two young women for their efforts and passion for education.
