Sophomore Jack Byun has been selected for the 2019-20 National Security Language Initiative for Youth program in Chinese through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In recognition of Jack’s achievements in his Chinese language studies at PVHS, his Chinese teacher, Mrs. Yao, encouraged and nominated Jack for this program.

Jack earned a scholarship to a Summer Chinese (Mandarin) language program in Xiamen, China. The NSLI-Y programs emphasize rapid language acquisition in an immersion environment by combining in-class language instruction, a comprehensive cultural program, and homestays.

“The NSLI-Y scholarship selection process is very competitive,” said Ms. Noemi Rodriguez, district supervisor of instruction, World Languages. “We would like to congratulate Jack on this outstanding achievement!”
