Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum is designed to meet and exceed the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics, as students will have opportunities to take advanced courses such as Precalculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, Advanced Topics in Calculus, Statistics, AP Statistics, College Algebra, and Discrete Math, as well as the core courses of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II with Trigonometry. In addition, students will have the opportunity to take one of several Computer Science courses, including Intro to Computer Science and App Development, Honors Computer Science, AP Computer Science A, and Advanced Topics in Computer Science. Each of these courses will seek to build procedural fluency on a foundation of conceptual understanding. 

The mathematics department is committed to using technology to enhance instruction and help students become educated producers and consumers of quantitative information in the 21^st century.

The Mathematics Department utilizes assessment for the following reasons:

• To determine students’ mastery of standards and course objectives
• To provide feedback so that students and teachers can identify strengths and weaknesses
• To give students opportunities to apply knowledge in new contexts
• To prepare students for high-stakes assessments

Assessment will look different for different courses, but most will require some combination of the following: homework, class work, quizzes, projects, tests, and larger unit tests, midterms or finals. Some courses conduct part or all of their assessments using a standards-based approach. Feedback is a critical part of assessment, and students can expect feedback within one week for smaller assessments and two weeks for larger assessments, subject to makeups.

The included is the current curricula for the Pascack Valley Regional High School District. They have all been approved by the Pascack Valley Regional High School District Board of Education and are in alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards approved by the New Jersey State Department of Education. Curricula for Advanced Placement (AP) courses have been approved by the College Board through their AP Audit.
