Earlier this fall, the Pascack Valley High School Honors Advanced Photography II & AP Studio Art: 2-Design (Photo) classes taught by Ms. Christine Back, traveled to New York City to document life in the city through photographs. While there, the students also visited art galleries to see original prints of images they had studied online.

To prepare for the trip, these 2nd & 3rd year photo students were given an assignment to make documentary portraits of Pascack Valley students they did not yet know. These brief sessions during our common lunch and Pascack Period helped them to get comfortable asking subjects to give a moment of their time.

During photo class, the students studied the work and shooting practice of photographers known for photographing strangers and documenting the pace of public life in America’s cities, parks, and small towns. Hearing about how these men and women accepted the fact that failure and rejection were an integral part of their creative process helped the students to build their own resilience.

“On the morning of the trip, it was clear that many of the students had taken these examples to heart,” said Ms. Back. “With cameras ready and their eyes were scanning the scene for ways to warm up their photo reflexes, the students hit the ground running. An unexpected bonus was learning that the day of the field trip coincided with the first day of Comic Con which provided many unique subjects to photograph.”
